Treatment of Angelman Syndrome

                Although AS has no definite treatment, there are many approaches suggested for hyperactivity, seizures, mental retardation, speech impairment, and other medical problems.  

                To counteract the usual hyperactivity in AS, drug therapy may be prescribed to aid sleep.  Dietary management and/or anti-seizure medications are used to control typical seizures.  Kids with AS seem to profit from educational training.  Those who experience a balance problem can gain improvement from physical/occupational therapy.  To better develop their speech, people with AS are led toward nonverbal communication plans.

                For newborns there may be some trouble with feeding, so certain interventions may be necessary.  Surgery may be used to treat such causes as gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), strabismus (crossed eyes), or scoliosis (curvature of the spine).  Other methods are practiced as well for these conditions. ^[1]
