Who is Affected by Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle Cell Disease affects mostly African Ancestry, but also occurs in other ethinic group. Such as, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern descent. More than 70,000 Americans are living with this disease and about 2 million have the sickle cell trait. About one in twelve African Americans have Sickle Cell Disease. The disease affects about 1 in 36,000 Hispanic American births. [1]
