Initial Symptoms

Adrenoleukodystrophy often starts to appear in children ages 4 to 8. Before the onset of symptoms, these children usually exhibit normal growth and development. However, the child's behavior will usually suddenly change and they will start to exhibit difficulty in school, impaired vision, and impaired hearing.

Progressive Symptoms

After the initial symptoms, the patient's health will start to deteriorate rapidly. Some of these symptoms are dementia, poor coordination, seizures, hyperactivity, difficulty with speech, and headaches. Usually after the onset of symptoms the patient will go into a vegetative state. This period can last anywhere from 6 months to 20 years although it usually lasts about 2 years. Eventually, the vegetative state will result in the death of the patient.
