What should I look for?



Symptoms can start to show as early as 3, and as late as 60. Usually, signs start in the liver and can inculde swelling and tenderness. Fever can also occur, along with some other symptoms which can resemble those of other common diseases, like hepatitis and mononucleosis. If there is no medical help, the liver will end up breaking down, which is also known as cirrhosis. Fulminant hepatitis, or liver failure, can also result from Wilson disease. 

Physical Symptoms:


  • jaundice

  • fluid leaking into the abdomen
  • low protein circulating in the blood
  • abnormalities of the blood clotting system
  • swelling of the brain
  • anemia due to the abnormal destruction of red blood cells
  • joint disorders
  • symptoms of arthritis
  • skeletal problems such as osteoporosis
  • irregular menstrual cycles in women
  • Kayser-Fleischer rings


Neurological symptoms start occuring when the copper builds in the nervous system and brain. These symptoms start first in about half of the people with the disease. These start occuring around the age of 21. There is no effect on a person’s cognitive abillity.

Neurological Symptoms 

  • tremors of the hands
  • uncontrollable movements of the limbs
  • stiffness
  • drooling
  • difficulty swallowing
  • difficulty talking
  • headache



One third of the people with Wilson Disease experience behavioral symptoms.

Behavioral Symptoms 

  • inability to cope
  • depression
  • irritability
  • increased anger
  • inappropriate behavior
