A Brief Overview of Achondroplasia

A literal translation of the word achondroplasia means "without cartilage formation," though in actuality, achondroplasia is a genetic disorder that results in an inability to turn cartilage to bone, especially in the arms and legs. A form of dwarfism, the general term for disorders that cause short stature, achondroplasia is the most common type that involves shortening of the limbs. Achondroplasia is also one of the oldest recongnized genetic defects. Achondroplasia is the most common cause of dwarfism, occuring in an estimated 1 in 14,000 to 40,000 births and affecting males and females equally. [1]
