The Morrill Act of 1862

This act is known as the first federal government aid to higher education. The Morrill Act gave a 30,000 acre grant to each state in the form of land scrip certificates for each Representative and Senator in Congress. The total amount of land given was over 100 million acres. State colleges and universitis got started from the land grants; it became a new national system. State colleges gave millions more students a chance for higher education and a better life.
