Andrew Jackson served as major general during the War of 1812. He was a leading commander in the wars against the Seminole Indians in the mid-1800's. Jackson's troops tended to kill indiscriminately Indian men, women, and children. The atrocities committed during the Indian removal campaign marred his reputation during his years as President. Jackson served as President from 1829-1837.
