Danny Ramoz Gomez

[1]

Danny Ramos Gomez has a condition called hypertricosis. Genetics is the reason he has been called “the wolf man” since his early 20’s. Gomez has a 26-year old brother, Larry, who also has Hypertrichosis. Both of them were known for their daredevil feats in a Mexican circus. When they were younger, both boys were part of a freak show, exhibited like animals and called “wolf children”. They were kept locked and they weren’t allowed to come out until show time.

The brothers began working as magicians. Danny started on the trampoline, and from the trampoline he went to become a trapeze artist. Danny wants to work in the large circuses in order to become more popular with the circus people someday.

Except for his excessive hair, Danny is by all other accounts normal. But there are people that still view him as a freak. He is perceived as a wolf, and is insulted.

According to Dr. Luis Figuera, a geneticist, as humans evolve, certain genes that were unnecessary for survival mutated and were turned off. Figuera believes that in Danny’s family, the gene for Hypertrichosis was somehow turned back on.

In Danny’s family, at least five generations of people have the problem. There also around 20 affected people in his family. Danny’s grandmother does not have Hypertrichosis, but she carries the mutation and passed it on to her children. Danny’s cousins and his little sister all have varying degrees of Hypertrichosis.[2]
