Directions for Genetic Disorders -- Mrs. Keller's AP Biology Class

This is your final exam grade.

Now is your chance to design a Wikipedia-like page by creating your own Genetic Disorders Wiki.

Go ahead and take a look at Wikipedia right now (Don't be afraid...Mrs. Young says it's OK!).  What things do you notice about the main page?  What types of information are included?

You should especially notice:

  • links to:
    • definitions of words
    • other websites
    • similar subjects
  • pictures
  • words
  • citations

Your task

Working with your group, you will to do three things:

  1. a Genetic Disorders Wiki on a disorder of your choice.
  2. a handout that will be given to other students to help them learn about the information that is in your wiki.
  3. Each individual within the group will need to comment a minimum of five times to other sites within the whole Genetic Disorders Wiki.

A rubric is linked from the home page or can be found at Genetic Disorders Rubric.  This will be used to grade your group's final project.

Steps to Take

  1. Decide on your group members.  Make certain that you are choosing individuals with whom you can work well.  There will be 2-3 people to a group.
  2. Decide on a Genetic Disorder.  Each group must choose a separate topic from anyone else.
  3. You may need to divide into subtopics if you have a topic that includes a lot of information.
  4. Decide how you will divide the work.

Things You Need to Include

  • Authors/Names of those developing the page
  • Information: We are giving you "free-reign" on what to include. Be sure to include ALL pertinent information and it should be written in AP-level vocabulary.  Remember to include the genetics part of your genetic disorder.
  • Final Exam information: Because this is your final exam, be sure to include information about how your disorder relates to any/all of the following -
    • Cell division
    • Macromolecules and biochemistry
    • Cellular respiration and energy production
    • Cellular make-up and organization
  • Links to:
    • definitions of words
    • other websites
    • similar subjects
    • back to your home page
  • Pictures and/or diagrams with captions.  Don't include a picture without a caption.
  • MLA citations for all sources and pictures.
  • Any thing else that you feel is important to include

 Recommendations

  • Save frequently.  I've learned from experience, so please take my word for it.
  • You will have full access to the wiki, so please make certain that you don't change things that you aren't supposed to!
  • Cite everything.
  • When you log in, click off of "Notify me of changes."
  • Be creative!  This is something new and you can do anything you want with it.  If you aren't sure if it is OK, just ask.

Now go back to the AP Biology Genetic Disorder page and get working!  Feel free to check the Helpful Hints and Resources sections if you aren't certain of how to do something (and add to it if you would like).
