Genetic engineering is the direct manipulation of genes for practical purposes.  Several of these purposes include yielding bigger and better crops and meat, aiding in infertility problems, finding cures for diseases, etc. Genetic engineering offers humans, as animals, a unique way to enhance their lifestyles.  However, several ethical issues are correlated with genetic engineering.  Some say it's taking God out of the picture of creation.  Some say that consuming such genetically altered foods and releasing them into the environment may damage the ecosystem, increase pollution, increase medical problems such as allergies, and disrupt entire food chains.

Humans

Genetic engineering of humans is an area that is still being explored.  Genetic engineering consists of primarily gene therapy and research. Controversies arise in the ethics that lie behind the topic of genetic engineering of humans.

The "mouse-ear" project began in 1989, when Charles Vacanti grew a small piece of human cartilage on a scaffold.  Eight years later, Charles's team was able to mold such into the shape of an ear.  Shown above, they implanted the ear under the skin layer of a mouse.

Plants   <---click here for more exciting information about plants!!

Genetic engineering in plants is just as exciting as this dancing banana.  You see Ted, the banana you see below, is a victim of the genetic injection of hormones.  Before this genetic transformation, Ted was just an ordinary banana but since his genetic operation, he is a lively little fruit.

Animals

For more information about the genetic engineering of animals, please visit the above link!  The genetic engineering of animals involves such things as breeding Belgian Blue cattle, "greedy chickens," and transgenic rabbits.  It involves breeding cattle that produce extraordinary amounts of lean meat, featherless chickens, and rabbits that can glow in the dark.  The genetic engineering of animals has been happening, is currently happening, and will continue to be happening as the future looms.  However, with much debate about genetic engineering showcasing both the positives and the negatives, many people ponder the longevity of such an issue.  What do YOU think?

Dolly the sheep, shown above, was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell.

This wiki probably had the best flow and organization of any other page. I especially enjoyed the cartoon and pictures on the intro page because they added interest from the first glance. Also, the links to the different types of engineering were pretty enlightening, even though we have some background knowledge in genetic engineering.

I like the story of Ted the banana and how it led to the major genetically engineered crops of today. The clever cartoon is humorous because it shows how rediculous it is that people actually think they should have the power to control the genetic makeup of another's life. Also, this page was really well-organized and easy to understand.

This was very informative. I liked the pictures and the creativity that enhanced this wiki. There was one page that I thought was extremely colorful and somewhat of a bit of a distraction for the eyes. Other than that, this was great and informative. I REALLY liked how you all linked back to the main page. That was very thoughtful.

The dancing banana was funny, but it was a little hard to find all the information. The links back to the other pages were really nice though. The pictures added a lot too.

GIRLS, that dancing Ted is just hilarious. I learning a lot about genetic engineering; especially with animals. I hope to one day own a rabbit that is neon green! You had some creative ideas, and you can tell you all put a lot of work into your project. I am proud to be your classmate, but your worksheet is way too difficult.

With the amount of information you had it was very well organized. I also liked all of the pictures you had, they were very cool. The only hard part was finding some of the answers to your handout. Overall, GREAT JOB it looks very nice.

Very nicely done. Lots of information relevant to genetic engineering including a lot that we didn't learn from this class already. The dancing banana was also a nice little joke in there. It WAS a little difficult finding all the information though...but otherwise, GREAT JOB!

I liked that you had a lot of pictures that were relevant to the information you were presenting. Over all, though it was somewhat diffucult to navigate. The dancing banana sort of threw me off a bit, and it took me a while to realize that it was a link to actual relevant information.

Your wiki had soooo much information. I liked how it was divided onto different wiki pages. I learned alot more than i knew, especially on you handout. the handout had tons of information i had missed from your website.

The wiki was amazing. It had so much information and I really liked how there were links to other pages that had even more information about genetic engineering.

You guys did a great job of linking your information to other sites. It made it more enjoyable and accessible as someone viewing your website. I thought that all of your fun facts made it very catchy, yet they all still pertained to genetic engineering.

There was a very large amount of information on your site and a lot to be learned, however, I thought it was pretty tricky to navigate through. Many of the links were kind of confusing and, while yes, I do agree the dancing banana is a god among produce, he might not be the most relevant thing you could have thrown on there. Still, there was obviously a lot of effort put into the wiki, and like I said, definitely a lot of good information on your site.
