Development
Virtually all children with Cri du Chat syndrome suffer from some intellectual disability. Again, how severely they are affected is extremely variable but a Cri du Chat patient will usually have one of the following:
- impaired speech/language development

- delayed motor development

- obsessive/repetitive behaviors, sometimes self-harming

- low muscle tone during infancy; contributes to walking difficulties

Whatever the symptoms, the Cri du Chat patient will develop much slower than normal. Most walk by ages 2 to 6, some never manage to speak and use sign language instead, etc. Other areas of development are not impaired: Cri du Chat patients thrive socially and are very happy with a good sense of humor.
