Easing the Life of Those with Achondroplasia

Unlike some genetic defects, achondroplasia cannot be "cured," meaning the treatment for achondroplasia involves managing the different health problems and limitations that come with achondroplasia rather than modifying the gene or suppressing its activity.[1]Therefore, the below listed methods are not standard for every achondroplasia case, but rather, depend on the individual's symptoms.

  • Surgerical Treatment: There are many different types of surgeries that address problems caused by achondroplasia. These surgical procedures include, but are not limited to...

1. Shunt procedure: As mentioned earlier, people with achondroplasia often have an increased brain size. A complication of this includes a build up of fluid pressure in the skull, as the channels that usually remove excess fluid are blocked. To help combat this, shunts can be inserted in the skull to reduce the built-up pressure.

2. Limb lengthening procuedures: A somewhat controverisal procedure, limb lengthening procedures surgically modify the bones in legs, adding, on average, a few inches of height to those with dwarfism. This procedure is well known for its pain and long recovery time, and it is recommended as only a last resort.[3]

3. Middle ear tubes: A buildup of fluid can occur in the ear, causing hearing loss. To help allieviate this, tubes can be placed in the ear to drain fluid.

  • Hormonal Therapy: Though it has not proven to be effective in adults, children that are given certain growth hormones have shown a slight improvement in their growth. However, there has not enough positive results to widely recommend this type of treatment. [4]

  • Adaptive Products:Those with achondroplasia often must use specially designed products in their lives to help them adapt to a bigger world. From clothes to furniture, there are many products that help those with achondroplasia not only live independently, but also enjoy a full life like anyone else.

With the help of specially designed prodcuts, those with achondroplasia and other forms of dwarfism can participate in nearly everything anyone else does, including bicycling.
